For many years Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ has been a popular variety for planting in urban towns and cities due to its tolerance to pollution. It makes a particularly colourful specimen tree that creates a showy centrepiece for a large garden. This is is one of the first Cherries to flower in the spring. Single, pink-blushed flowers bloom along the bare shoots from mid spring. The flowers fade to white as the leaves begin to emerge, contrasting beautifully with the purple-black twigs. The foliage is bronzed initially, colouring to a deep purple through the summer, followed by an autumn extravaganza of red and orange. small, red, plum-shaped fruits may set in some seasons, adding further seasonal interest. Black Cherry Plum forms a striking, rounded tree with maturity, thriving in most soils. Height and spread: 10m (33′).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
