Catalpa bignonioides ‘Aurea’ is a spreading, deciduous tree for a warm, sheltered position. This eye-catching variety is predominantly grown for its colourful heart-shaped foliage, which emerges bronze and matures to bright gold before fading to green in late summer. From July to August the branches are decorated with upright panicles of showy, white blooms. These are followed by pendulous seed pods from which it gets the common name of Indian Bean Tree. A fabulous focal point when grown as a stand-alone specimen tree, but equally effective at the back of sunny borders when the stems are pollarded annually to create a large shrub. Height and spread as tree: Up to 10m (32’). Height and spread if pollarded: 3m (10’).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
